Green Bean Casserole

            Today in Foods for and With Which I Give Thanks, let's talk about greens.

I stewed them with pig, and, cooking for non-pig-eating folks, with dried shrimp and shiitake mushrooms, Chinese ingredients I recognized at the local Vietnamese market. I started making mac and cheese with Vietnamese rice paper rolls as the noodles and baking corn bread to sop up those Asian-inflected greens.

One day, without the time to properly cook up a batch of collard greens, I took another Asian cue and thought to stir-fry them with onions and fish sauce, the secret weapon of the Southeast Asian pantry.

I never realized that sticky glutinous rice wasn't part of everyone's festive meal. I was in love with a mushy side dish made up of processed foods.

I no longer make the kind of green bean casserole that requires a can opener, but it still appears on my menu, modified of course: fresh green beans, blanched and sautéed with cremini mushrooms, covered with a roux-thickened cream sauce, topped with pan-fried shallots.

Applebees Veterans Day

The food was excellent and the serving staff was excellent, especially the dark-haired young lady behind the counter. Thank you for remembering this country's military.

Now people are asking why this company are offering free meals to all the US veterans and active duty service members in celebration of Veterans Day 2010.

Apparently, heere are the free offerings: 7 oz House Sirloin Steak, Chicken Tenders, Bacon Cheeseburger, Double Crunch shrimp, Three-Cheese Chicken Penne, Fiesta Lime Chicken, and the Oriental Chicken Salad. According to Applebee’s, the salad has 1,310 calories and 93 g of fat, 15 of which are saturated.

The Giada de Laurentiis John Mayer rumors spreading across the internet have spun a tangled web that has food network and music fans buzzing with interest. Well, Giada de Laurentiis’ husband is Todd Thompson, a successful fashion designer in his own right. Giada de Laurentiis who first laughed off the John Mayer rumors is now fighting back. John Mayer himself has denied the rumors of an affair. The representative for Giada de Laurentiis has demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Star Magazine.

U.S. law has allowed countless rumors to be reported from anonymous sources about hundred of celebrities, and without such legal protections tabloid newspapers would be quickly run out of business.

Nevertheless one can sympathize with the targets of such unsubstantiated rumors, whether Giada de Laurentiis and John Mayer, or others who have been targeted similarly.

‘Star’ meanwhile contacted Giada via its correspondent when Giada was co-hosting a charity performance for children’s cancer. Giada, the host of ‘Everyday Italian’, unambiguously rejected interacting with Mayer in New York during the Food and Wine Festival there. Giada, in its place, declared that she never entered Gansevoort Hotel with Mayer.

Giada’s spokesperson has voiced that Giada had bumped into Mayer in 2007 at a benefit. Giada has a 2-year-old daughter with Todd, who is the Anthropologie designer.

 Nov 13, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Rumor mills in the town have spun of an allegedly romance brewing between Giada De Laurentiis and John Mayer. The celebrated Everyday Italian host is believed to be dating singer/guitarist John Mayer. Although Giada De Laurentiis has slammed the news by calling it rubbish. Giada De Laurentiis who is married to Anthropologie designer Todd Thompson is the mother of a two year old daughter .

On the other hand John Mayer too has snubbed the reports calling them as utterly ridiculous.

The 2010 Celebrity chef line-up for the Fabulous Food Show at Cleveland's I-X Center will still include the Food Network's Giada de Laurentiis this weekend, as well as celebrity chefs Anne Burrell, Guy Fieri, Alton Brown, and Cleveland's own Iron Chef Michael Symon.

Giada De Laurentiis is a chef and the star of the Food Network's shows "Everyday Italian" and "Giada at Home."

To prepare, he ran more than 600 miles, including two 20-mile runs.

Hot Chocolate 15k

Local moms, ranging from walkers to experienced marathon runners, participated in the 5k option of the race. It led runners and walkers down Lake Shore Drive, looped around Solider Field, around the Adler Planetarium and back on Lake Shore Drive to Columbus Drive and Congress Parkway. The run was hosted by RAM Racing and the primary sponsor was the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute. Vendors featured running wear, shoes, sports gel and energy bars and the favorite "Will Run For Chocolate" logo apparel.
Speaking of chocolate. The post race fun included Maggie Speak performing live on stage, a kids zone, fondue tent, Ghirardelli Square and hot chocolate tent. A total of  15,000 pounds of Ghirardelli Hot Cocoa were brewed and 30,000 pounds of chocolate melted.
You've already seen my post about the Hot Chocolate "technical runner's jacket" but having now run the race, I can give a full review of the complete experience.

The overall impression I had was that the race organizers simply were not prepared for the amount of runners who registered.

The 5k has 12,702 people recorded as crossing the finish line.  To give a little perspective, the Chicago Marathon had a record high number of finishers this year when 38,132 people crossed the finish line.

Hot Chocolate managed to close Columbus for the Start and Finish line, but 90% of the race took place along the lakefront path, parking lots and on/off ramps of Lake Shore Drive. Wrong, that was the tent where they later handed out hot chocolate.

The race was overwhelmingly crowded, but that isn't rare in big racing events.  Totally fine.  Personally I ran a great race, I finished in 1 hour, 38 minutes for an average pace of 10:32, a time I am very happy with. Unfortunately I lost Eileen & spent the rest of the race running quickly trying to catch up & find her.  Bummer.  People were forced to walk many times because there simply was not enough room for a large group of people to run.  Also I didn't get any hot chocolate because the spots I went to ran out.
